Financing Options

Students may apply for federal financial aid by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). For more information and eligibility information, visit the UCLA Financial Aid Office website.

Apply via FAFSA

A student may receive a departmental or Graduate Division award in addition to an award based solely on financial need if the need-based criteria are met. However, the amount of a need-based award may change based on any other additional awards. Speak with an enrollment specialist for more information.

Many employers also offer their own educational benefits and professional development funds that can be utilized for tuition assistance. To explore your options, we encourage you to speak with your employer directly about using workplace benefits to fund your degree.

Students can seek financial support from a wide range of public and private sources to help pay for some or all of their tuition and fees. We recommend exploring our Grad Funding database first.

You can also look through scholarship search sites like Scholarships.com and Fastweb.com, as well as local community organizations and professional associations.

Private loans are available to graduate students who have utilized all of their Federal Loan eligibility, but still have remaining costs. UCLA Samueli strongly encourages students to explore all of their federal loan options before pursuing a private loan, as these loans can have higher interest rates, stricter repayment plans and more impact on your credit score.

You should also keep in mind that being approved for a private loan often depends on your credit score, but a cosigner can improve the chances for approval.

For more information, review our private loan guide.

Service members, veterans, dependents and other beneficiaries may apply for education benefits through the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs at www.va.gov. UCLA can provide assistance with applying for federal and state education benefits.

For a list of frequently asked questions, please see UCLA’s FAQ about VA Education Benefits. To learn more about the resources available to veterans and active service members, consult the Veteran Resource Center website.

Payment Plan Options

For complete payment plan information, visit the BruinPay Plan page.

At UCLA, eligible students can utilize BruinPay Plan to pay their term fees in monthly installments.

UCLA expects that students will either enroll in the payment plan or make a full payment for all charges by the payment due date for each term. If payment is not received or if you have not enrolled in the payment plan by the due date, your course registration may be affected.

Please note that the payment plan is not available for the summer terms.

Eligibility

Most UCLA students are eligible for the payment plan. You will not be considered eligible if any of the following are true:

  • Your tuition is fully covered by financial aid
  • You have an outstanding short-term loan (to lift this restriction, the balance must be paid off prior to the 19th day of the enrollment month)
  • You have an unpaid balance from a previous term
  • You have three or more returned checks/eCheck payments
  • You have a balance due for the summer session/term
  • Your account balance has already been paid
