Admissions Requirements
Applicants for our program should meet the following requirements:
- A bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution in an engineering discipline, mathematics, computer science or physics
- A GPA of 3.0 in the last two years of undergraduate coursework
- For applicants whose GPA falls slightly below the required threshold, UCLA will also consider other aspects of the application before making an admissions decision.
- GRE test scores may be waived for applicants who have highly competitive holistic portfolios.
- TOEFL/IELTS test scores
- Required for international applicants
- Proficiencies in computer programming, including Python

- Upon applying, please select “Engineering – Online” as the major; thereafter, you will be able to select “Data Science Engineering” as a specialization
- Application fee
- $135 for U.S. citizens and permanent residents/$155 all other applicants
- Application fee waivers are available for applicants who are current or former participants in certain programs or demonstrate financial need. Contact an enrollment consultant for more information.

- Three professional or academic letters of recommendation
- Statement of purpose
- Up to 500 words focusing on your professional goals and reasons for pursuing a master’s in engineering. Describe any experience from your career in contributing to the field of data science. Discuss your objectives after you receive your master’s degree. Approximately one page, single spaced, using one-inch margins and 12-point font.
- Personal statement
- Up to 500 words discussing the personal experiences that brought you to apply for a master’s in engineering. Approximately one page, single spaced, using one-inch margins and 12-point font.
- GRE general score
- Submit official scores to UCLA (ETS school code: 4837)
- TOEFL/IELTS score (international students only)

Decision Process
Submitted application materials are reviewed by faculty admissions committees who select qualified applicants. The admissions committee bases recommendations for admission upon a careful comparison of applications, and this may take considerable time.
